Kerchanshe Group and Geely Partner to Enhance Ethiopia's Shifting EV Market Terrain
In a bold and strategic pivot, Kerchanshe Group, a premium coffee exporter renowned for its deep roots in Ethiopian agriculture, is partnering with Geely to revolutionize Ethiopia's electric vehicle market. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in Ethiopia's automotive evolution, bringing cutting-edge EV technology to East Africa.
The partnership will introduce Geely's Geometry series of electric vehicles to Ethiopia, supported by Kerchanshe's established distribution network across the country. Initial plans include the establishment of charging infrastructure in Addis Ababa and along major transport corridors, with service centers in five regional capitals.
Charging Ethiopia's Electric Future
Under the agreement, Kerchanshe will import 500 Geely Geometry EVs in the first phase, with plans to expand to 5,000 units annually by 2027. The vehicles will be specially adapted for Ethiopian road conditions and climate, featuring enhanced battery cooling systems and ruggedized suspension components.
"This partnership represents more than just vehicle imports - it's about building Ethiopia's entire EV ecosystem. We're investing in charging infrastructure, technician training, and renewable energy integration to create a sustainable mobility solution."
Mekonnen Gebreselassie, Kerchanshe Auto CEO
The initiative aligns with Ethiopia's Climate Resilient Green Economy strategy, which aims to reduce transportation emissions by 64% by 2030. Kerchanshe's existing agricultural logistics network will serve as the first major fleet customer, converting 20% of its delivery vehicles to electric within three years.
Technical training programs will launch at Kerchanshe's Addis Ababa facility, certifying 200 EV technicians annually. The curriculum, developed with Geely engineers, will cover high-voltage systems, battery management, and charging infrastructure maintenance.
